DOD Notifies Troops of South Carolina Cyber Intrusions

The Defense Department and South Carolina officials are notifying military members and families who paid state income taxes in South Carolina may have been victims of information/identity theft as a result of several recent cyber intrusions.  South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley said an international hacker is responsible for illegally obtaining 4 million social security numbers from electronically filed state tax returns dating back to 1998.  From defense.gov:

“We know an international hacker came into our system and got an employee to click on something that allowed him to get his password,” Haley said. “From there, he was able to take that password and gather information.”

The Army’s real UFO

Is it really a UFO?

With its round design standing at nearly five feet tall and 18 feet wide, the Avro Canada VZ-9AV Avrocar looks like something out of a 1950s science-fiction film.  While it may look like something a martian would fly, the Avrocar is anything but science fiction.

Newly declassified documents concerning the Avrocar project were released Oct. 8, when they were published by the U.S. National Archives. Information about the aircraft has been available for years, but the documents now include diagrams that clearly demonstrate the scope of the project.  From Armed with Science:

“The Avrocar was a good start, and the first step on a long road to discovering technology we use today,” said Jeff Underwood, National Museum of the Air Force historian.   “Although the project was never implemented, it serves a successful teaching tool.”

See it fly here.

USS Enterprise Completes Its Final Voyage

The world’s first nuclear aircraft carrier has returned home from it’s final deployment. USS Enterprise will be scrapped after more than 50 years of service. You can watch TPC’s coverage above.

The Navy is planning an “Inactivation Week” for the legendary ship, November 27 – December 1.  From the official USS Enterprise website:

All Veterans of Enterprise, families and friends, and those who share in the pride of Big E are invited to attend the Inactivation Ceremony and to visit the ship in the week leading up to the Ceremony.

The ship will be scrapped because the work involved in removing Enterprise’s nuclear reactors will make the costs of restoration as a museum ship prohibitive.

DoD’s Sandy Response Grows

More than 12,000 National Guardsmen are now assisting with recovery efforts following Hurricane Sandy — and that’s just part of the Defense Department’s response.

The Army Corps of Engineers is rushing high speed pumping equipment to drain flooded parts of New York City.

The Navy is positioning three ships USS Wasp, USS San Antonio and USS Carter Hall – closer to the east coast, in case the ships and their helicopters are needed  for search, rescue or logistical operations.

And the Air Force is mobilizing aircraft and air crews from accross the U.S.  At least 13 crews from active duty, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve units are slated to deliver more than 600 tons of equipment and relief supplies to aid with the hurricane response.
