In a scene that sounds like it came straight from the movie Hurt Locker, one Soldier competing in the 2010 U.S. Army Championship Combatives Tournament recounts how the proper use of combatives saved 24 Soldiers from a car bomb.
“When I was in Afghanistan, we were on front gate guard duty at Camp Phoenix, Kabul with two Soldiers that I taught combatives,” said Staff Sgt. Neal Lang. “We had a guy drive a car bomb to the front gate.”
Lang is a combatives instructor at Fort Sill, and said he believes that every Soldier in the Army needs combatives in addition to training on standard weapons in order to become a complete warrior.
“The guy had a propane tank behind his head, so they couldn’t shoot him,” said Lang. “When he couldn’t detonate the bomb, my Soldiers ran up and put the guy in a clinch, ripped him out the car and stopped him before he could detonate.”
Lang added, “It was 250-pound C4 bomb that as under that car. If he had detonated he’d have killed about 24 Soldiers.”
Let’s review. What do you do if a maniac is trying to detonate a 250-pound C4 bomb and you can’t shoot because he’s got a propane tank attached to his head?
If you’re combatives trained, you just kick that guy’s ass.
